Looking into notions of authorship and collective writing practices, Maruyama invited artists, writers, and the public to hand-copy passages from the book Il Milione by Marco Polo. Working with passages of the book that have been translated into the native languages of the selected scribes (participants), and writing on Chinese rice paper scrolls with india ink, this became a collective work open to the public.
This project took shape during an initial attempt of the transcription using a Dutch translation in Dordrecht in 2013. The second edition was carried out at GEMAK, the Hague, over the course of three days in April 2014. Visitors wrote Amharic, English, Farsi, Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, and other languages. Il Milione is an ongoing project.
With support from Dordrecht neighborhood theater and GEMAK, The Hague.
Performance and installation, copies of Il Milione in various languages (print and e-books), writing implements, rice paper, india ink.
